Sandstone Reservoirs

A transect from continent to basin analysing fluvial, deltaic and turbidite key sandbodies

May 6-10, 2024

by Lluís Ardèvol and Sara Parra

This field trip analyses the facies and quantifies the geometries and architecture of sandbodies in depositional environments evolving from fluvial to slope settings, and studies Cretaceous and Eocene deltas. Data on Eocene outcrops comes from mostly unpublished personal research. The Cretaceous delta is based on an update of the paper Depositional Sequence Response to Foreland Deformation in the Upper Cretaceous of the Southern Pyrenees, Spain, by Ardèvol et al., 2000, AAPG Bulletin.

Delta plain

  • Fluvial channels: tide-storm influence, depositional bars

Delta front / bay-head deltas

  • Lacustrine lobes
  • Fluvial: mouth bars, lobes
  • Tidal: tidal flats, shoals, tidal bars
  • Wavy / estuarine: strand plain, barrier, foreshore, shoreface

Prodelta

  • Offshore sands

Slope

  • Turbidite channels and lobes
